Blow Drying Technique: Voluminous Sexy Curls

What's sexier than a mane of voluminous, bouncy curls?

Whether you're a client or cosmetology student, professional blowouts aren't the only way to achieve the mane of your dreams!

Perfect curls can be achieved with the right blow drying technique, and we're here to show you exactly what to do.

Let's get into it!

Get Your Tools Ready

What's the secret behind most beauty techniques? The right tools, of course!

If you're looking to master the best blow drying technique, you'll want to get yourself a professional dryer that allows you to control the heat and speed.

You'll also need the following:

  • a jumbo round boar brush
  • salon clips or bobby pins
  • volumizing spray
  • shine spray
  • finishing hairspray

You can either use your normal blow-drying products or you can research the best tools for your specific hair type.

Unsure where to start? Ask a cosmetologist for her guidance! If you're a cosmetology student, ask your instructors! That's what they are there for!

Dry and Section

For optimal curls, you'll want to roughly blow-dry your hair until it's about 80% dry.

Once that's complete, it's best to section your hair in about 3-4 layers. Thicker hair will obviously require more sections. Keep in mind that it's simplest to focus on the top and work your way down.

When you blow-dry, make sure that you're drying your roots upwards. The round brush will help you achieve this.

Curl the Hair

Once you set the roots, you'll want to get to the curling! Once the section is dry, simply roll your hair all the way up using the brush.

To seal the curl (and prevent frizz), use a blast of hot blow-drying air for about five seconds directed on the spot.

Once the section is completely dry, blast it again with the coolest setting. After that, you'll need to gently uncurl the hair. Go slowly and cautiously- you don't want the hair to tangle or knot.

Pin the Hair

After unraveling the section, you'll want to roll your hair back up around your finger and secure the hair into a pin curl. Bobby pins work well for thinner hair, but thicker strands will likely need a salon clip.

Pinning the hair "sets" the curls and keeps them in place. You'll want to keep them pinned for as long as you'd like (overnight is great!).

After you're ready to release, the hair will be set. Take the pins out slowly (again, you want to avoid tangling) and give your curls a small shake.

Set the style with your shine and finishing hairspray. You're all set!

Final Thoughts on Your Curling Blow Drying Technique

As with any hair styling technique, practice makes perfect when it comes to creating sexy, voluminous curls.

Fortunately, you don't need to spend a lot of time or money to create a gorgeous mane.
